Thank you for giving such thoughtful info in your videos. Most of it is a bit advanced for me being a yellow belt but I take from it what I can. I am contacting you for advice about injury. Last week I injured my fellow Judoka during randori. I feel awful and need to learn as much as I can about how injury occurs in Judo so that I can do the most to make sure that it doesn't happen again. This particular injury happened when he was coming in for ouchi gari. I thought that he was trying a hip or forward throw so I tried to counter with tani otoshi. His leg was in between mine and I sat on his knee from the side bending it inward. I haven't seen him since to know the extent of the injury but I imagine that it can't be good. My Sensei's tell me that it is a common thing and that I didn't do anything wrong but I do feel awful and would like to never repeat this or other injury again.

Thank you
Samuel Fountain

Re: Ask a Question

IS THE NEW IJF RULES REGARDING THE GI CERTIFICATION LABEL WILL BE APPLY TO MASTER COMPETITORS IN INETRNATIONAL AND IN HOUSE COMPETITIONES.

Re: Ask a Question

duck under his right arm put your head on the other side with your right hand grab his right lapel turm in and drop keeping your posture like tsuri kome gosh iwhen turned in thrust hips up and with you left hand sweep his left leg

Re: Ask a Question

Your show rocks, and Judo is clearly an amazing art/sport. I am a short man (5' 4") and find many techniques are taught with taller Judoka's in mind. If one analyzes the typical defense these days, shorter players are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to attacking. It would be great if you focused some content from the perspective of being a shorter player.

Re: Ask a Question

i like ur teaching technique

Re: Ask a Question

It has happened to me in several occasions (Ne Waza) that my opponent grabs my arm and is ready to finalize an arm bar pushing with the legs (i am on top) but i resist by grabbing my arm kind of like a ring. When you apply this to an opponent who is heavier, this effectively eliminates almost all of his weight as a problem. The disruption of his balance and the following momentum plus a technique that attacks his center will cause him to be thrown with little strength required.

If you still have doubts, please look for "Kyuzo Mifune" on youtube. The guy was small, not physically imposing at all and was 65 years old, but he could easily throw people twice his size with almost no effort.

Re: Ask a Question

Hello Topaz, I hope I can help you.

Usually with heavier people, throwing them is not generally a good idea because you might exert yourself too much and cause damage. So using pure strength to throw is not a good idea.

What my judo teacher taught me is instead to use his weight against him. If you study the principles of "kuzushi" (balance destroying) you can use his faltering balance and momentum in addition to technique to throw a heavier person nearly every time.

If you have doubts, please look for "Kyuzo Mifune" on youtube. The guy was diminutive in stature and was 65 years old, but he could throw a guy easily twice his size using these principles.

Here is what my teacher told me: "Strength is limited, but technique is limitless."

Re: Ask a Question

what a great web site ... you seem like a very dynamic teacher and hopefully I can meet you one day ... Up here in Canada thats what is being pushed on us to do.

I would tell her to duck under and do Tae Guruma (Pick up) or a duck under leg pick with an ouchi gari. (Leg grabs will be taken away too though so this might not be a good idea)

Or how about just focus on getting the arm that would be going for her head and do a Makikomi. Of course Makikomi is going to be taken away from younger fighters too.

They are taking the wrestling out of Judo so it will be a different monster and force people to do true judo.

Re: Ask a Question

See... Karo Parisyan, Don Frye, Akiyama, Shinja Aoki, Yoshida, Hidehinko, Sokudu, Remco Pardue (UFC 2), Fedor the lists go on.... I know what you mean though.

However I think it has to do a great deal with a few factors...
1) Judo is not as popular in North America as Wrestling.
2) Judo uses a gi and many might feel uncomfortable.
3) Judo I think plays a bigger part over in asia in thier mma orgs.
4) Judo is not so recognized and is cross trained by wrestlers and Bjj guys. So when asked what they do they say one of the other two because your average guy knows what bjj and wrestling are.
5) Judo is not an "AGGRESSIVE" sport, dont get this confused with competitive though... And Make no mistake that MMA is AGGRESSIVE or greatly perseved as such.

For MMA I think its a wicked sport to have as a base. I would say it is 3/4 where BJJ is in the submission department and 3/4 what wrestling is in the takedown dept. Take down defence should be on par with Wrestling. And it would have the same level of Submission defence as BJJ. But it has a unique ability to work well off the cage/fence doing footsweeps/reaps "JUDO TRICKS" as Joe Rogan would say.

I would think Judo Would be better paired up with solid boxing rather than anything that throws kicks. But thats just my thoughts. Because its MIXED martial arts...

I hate watching the stereo typical, cookie cutter fighters I love watching fighters who are different... Machida, Karo Parisyan, Fedor, Cro Cop etc.

I hate watching the younger generation who can do everything, I guess I just like watching how grappling arts tend to rule in the octagon...
